One year countdown to “REAL ID Ready”

Gov. Andy Beshear has stressed the importance of having a REAL ID or other federally accepted form of identification to avoid travel disruptions. Kentuckians can obtain REAL credentials in person at any regional driver’s license office operated by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC).

While state-issued REAL ID credentials are the primary option, other acceptable forms of ID include passports, passport cards, military ID cards, or department ID cards of the defense. However, it is essential to note that a Kentucky REAL ID is not valid for international travel.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray stressed the importance of obtaining correct identification to avoid travel issues. REAL ID driver’s licenses can be applied for regardless of renewal eligibility.

Residents can renew their driver’s license up to six months before the expiration date. Those not within the renewal window can upgrade to a REAL ID for an additional $15, keeping the same expiration date.

Although standard licenses remain valid for driving and other purposes, REAL ID-compliant licenses are necessary to meet specific federal requirements, such as air travel and access to military bases. The cost for a four-year REAL ID-compliant driver’s license is $24 and $48 for an eight-year title.

To facilitate the application process, residents are encouraged to gather necessary documents before traveling to a regional office. For more information and to make an appointment, you can click here.
