Last year Lando Norris Talk about Oscar Piastri quickly got up to speed and praised his teammate for pushing him harder than ever. Piastri’s pace was also evident when McLaren improved its car last year. The only area where Piastri struggles seems to be race pace, and that is due to his poor tire management. The 2024 season began with Max Verstappen win the first 2 races and Carlos Sainz win the Australian GP because Verstappen retired from the race. It looked like Red Bull would continue their dominance from 2023, but McLaren has shaken things up. The British team made improvements to their car for the Miami GP and this appears to have brought them closer to Red Bull’s pace. While the safety car played a role in Lando Norris’ victory, he beat Max Verstappen on pure pace after the safety car and built a lead of 7.6 seconds at the end of the race.

As for the other McLarens, Oscar Piastri was having a good race until his contact with Carlos Sainz, which placed him at the back of the grid. The Australian qualified in P6 for the race and battled Carlos Sainz for an effective P4 for most of the race. However, the highlight of his race was battling with Sainz’s teammate Leclerc and then overtaking the Ferrari in a spectacular fashion that left Norris stunned as he said the three magic letters, “Wow”.

Andrea Stella praised Oscar Piastri’s performance in Miami, saying: “His performance in the race was, once again, very solid. Lando already said something really nice. Revealing what Norris said, he added: “He said that when he watched Oscar pass a Ferrari, he thought, ‘Wow, we’re actually there today.’ So it was a wake-up call for Lando himself. And Oscar was able to maintain a good pace during the first stint so I think he comes out of this weekend with this kind of conviction, which is what we wanted to improve.

It was an encouraging day for McLaren, despite Oscar Piastri’s incident with Carlos Sainz. The Australian admitted the same thing and spoke about his race and how it went.

“Mixed emotions” for Oscar Piastri after the Miami GP which turned sour

McLaren made major improvements to the car for the Miami GP. However, Lando Norris got the full package while Piastri only received half. However, the Australian was fast in the race. The contact with Sainz damaged the front wing and forced Piastri to return to the pits. However, despite a poor result for him, he was delighted with Lando Norris’ victory and the pace shown by his car before the incident with Ferrari.

Speaking after the Miami GP, Oscar Piastri explaining his contact with Sainz said: “A little unfortunate with the timing of the safety car obviously, and then (it) kind of fell apart from there.” Detailing how, with the pace of the car, he could also have made the podium, he added: “It’s obviously a really good day for the team, they deserved to have both cars up there. But yeah, it’s a really encouraging day in terms of pace and obviously winning on pace. (There was) a bit of luck but Lando had the pace afterwards, which I think is incredibly encouraging. So overall mixed emotions, but very, very happy for the team.
