The Pomona Host Lions Club and Chino Valley Lions Club, in conjunction with CaliforniaLions Friends in Sight, will sponsor a free vision screening event from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11 at the Chino Community Building, 5443 B St., Chino.

Vision screening, open to adults and children, is not intended to replace a complete eye exam and refraction by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. It is proposed to assess people’s eye health concerns and provide them with a free pair of glasses that people can use until they are able to obtain professional services, according to a news release.

Lions Club members will also collect used glasses and hearing aids at the event.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early in the day, as the screening may end before 2 p.m. depending on attendance. ID is not required.

Nearly 300 adults and children were screened at last year’s event in Pomona, according to the press release.

California Lions Friends in Sight is an independent, all-volunteer charitable organization affiliated with Lions Clubs International, headquartered in Beaumont.

Friends in Sight conducts more than 30 physician-led screenings each year in an area stretching from Blythe to Oxnard and south to San Diego and hosts five weekend-long screenings in northern Mexico. During the last fiscal year, the organization screened more than 12,000 people, distributed more than 9,500 pairs of free glasses and advised nearly 700 people to seek medical or surgical care, according to the press release.
