Meghalaya Koch Students’ Union holds silent mass rally to demand justice for gang rape victims

Ampati on May 9: A silent mass rally was organized by the Meghalaya Koch Students’ Union. The gathering took place on May 9, 2024, in southwest Garo Hills, Ampati. The rally started from Ghasura Cultural Center and headed towards the deputy commissioner’s office. The event aims to respond to the heinous incident of gang rape that occurred on April 16, 2023 at Chenga Benga Mela.

Over 7,654 people participated in the rally, from various organizations including Meghalaya Koch Association, Meghalaya Koch Women’s Association, All A’chik Youth Federation, Meghalaya Hajong Welfare Association, l Meghalaya Koch Association, Garo Students’ Union, A’chik Holistic Awareness Movement, and Achik Youth Welfare Organisation.

The participating organizations highlighted the urgent need to strengthen safety measures for women in the state and submitted a memorandum to the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ampati demanding justice for the victims of the aforementioned gang rape.
