Whoopi Goldberg offered Pope Francis a cameo in ‘Sister Act 3’

Whoopi Goldberg’s holy mission to the Vatican may have completed the cast of its long gestation Sister Act 3 movie.

The 68-year-old star has been teasing the Tyler Perry-produced Disney+ project for years, pitching casting ideas to everyone from Sheryl Lee to Ralph. See cohosts. In October 2023, however, Goldberg set his sights on Pope Francis to make what might be the holiest cameo of all.

“I wanted to thank him,” Goldberg told Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday. Tonight Show episode. “I’ve been trying to meet with him for about 10 years. Every time I said ‘okay, we’ll do it,’ I would intervene in something and then I couldn’t do it and they canceled the appearance.”

She continued, “He’s supposed to be the guy you talk to. I like him. He pissed off a lot of people because he said things that people don’t think are right, but I do. You are the pope. You say: “We welcome everyone to our party.”

She then revealed that Pope Francis “actually seems to be a bit of a fan” of her role as a singer-turned-nun in the Sisters Act films, which remain among the most popular entries in the Oscar winner’s filmography.

When Fallon asked about the possible appearance of Pope Francis in the third film in the series, Goldberg replied, “I offered one. He said he would see what his time would be like.”

Weekly Entertainment contacted representatives of Pope Francis for comment.

Goldberg’s trip to the Vatican in late 2023 made headlines because it forced the EGOT-winning icon to take a brief break from her post as moderator of View.

At the time, Goldberg said she had discussed continuing Sisters Act with the Pope, who praised his work as an artist.

“You know, we’re trying to help sisters move into the 21st century,” Goldberg told him. Although she called the project “idiotic,” Pope Francis stopped her. “One of the best things you can do for people is to help them, bring them joy and make them laugh,” he said.

In September 2022, Perry said View co-hosts that he had a solid storyline for Sister Act 3 but that he was frustrated by the slow process of making the film in the current climate.

“I loved the idea that we could make this happen, but the Hollywood system moves a little slower than I would like,” he said. “We have a good storyline. We’re off to a good start. We’re just trying to get everyone moving in the right direction to keep things moving forward.”
