BURTON, Washington County — The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a suspect in a vehicle burglary incident that occurred early Thursday morning.

Around 3 a.m. in the 6300 block of Rehburg Road in Burton, the crime was reported to authorities. They were also informed that shots had been fired.

When sheriff’s deputies arrived, the homeowner informed them that he had gone to investigate activity in his driveway when he found the suspect. The suspect shot him in the lower half of the body and fled toward a car parked on the same road after the homeowner also returned fire.

Authorities say the suspect’s car is a pickup truck, but no details on the make or model have been provided.

The homeowner who was shot received medical treatment and is currently in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

A search is underway for the suspect involved in the area by deputies and other law enforcement. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and the Texas Rangers are also investigating the case.
