LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — May is Small Business Month. This is an opportunity to support and celebrate the contributions of small businesses to our society.

Small businesses and startups not only drive the American economy, but they also help keep the American dream alive.

Las Vegas native Sherita Rogers owns two small businesses in the Valley.

After years of climbing the corporate ladder and working for the government, she said it was time to turn her dream of being her own boss into reality, creating TheExquisite Company, focused on design and event decorating, and My Sister’s Sweets, a matching dessert. business.

“Entrepreneurship is a family affair, so it’s meant to happen,” Rogers said. “However, I am a mother of three young children and (a wife) and I wanted to spend more time with them.”

Both companies offer personalized event planning services, from custom setup and decor to handmade gourmet treats. She said the idea to include desserts in her business plan was inspired by her sister, who died more than a year ago.

“She’s the one who really inspired me,” Rogers said. “We started out making caramel corn, and then that led to popcorn, and we just loved cooking together for fun. And I always said to myself, “We need to do more with this, let’s turn it into a business.” »

A few months later, Rogers received its business licenses.

“It’s really special. Now, every time I cook, I think of her, I hear her voice. I hear different things she would say,” Rogers said. “That’s why I named it My Sister’s Sweets because actually all my recipes came from her.”

Rogers said she is grateful to be among the courageous go-getters in our community who use their gifts and talents to serve others. She is also grateful to the community for its continued support of local businesses like hers.

“It’s really important that we stay strong as a community, support each other and know that small businesses are essential,” Rogers said.
