Champions League mistake referee ‘DROP’ from Euro 2024 tournament opener following Real Madrid vs. Bayern scandal

Champions League mistake referee ‘DROP’ from Euro 2024 tournament opener following Real Madrid vs. Bayern scandal

REFEREE Szymon Marciniak could be banned from Germany’s opening Euro 2024 match with Scotland after his controversial officiating in the Champions League semi-finals.

Marciniak, 43, made headlines around the world after Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu by denying Harry Kane and co a last-gasp equalizer, which would have forced the extension.

Bayern star Matthijs de Ligt scored the back of the net in the 13th minute of stoppage time, but the referee whistled for offside before slotting home the shot that beat Real goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

Linesman Tomasz Listkiewicz and his fellow Pole judged Noussair Mazraoui to be slightly offside during the build-up as he headed the ball towards the incoming De Ligt.

Linesmen are advised to delay raising their flags, particularly when the players involved are so close together.

The move angered Bayern, who saw Alphonso Davies’ opener canceled out by a late double from Joselu.

And according to Przegląd Sportowy, Marciniak has now been ruled out of his planned participation in Euro 2024, which hosts Germany’s first match of the tournament.

The Polish publication claims that the experienced referee has been appointed for the match between Julian Nagelsmann’s men and Scotland on June 14 at Bayern’s Allianz Arena in Munich, among others.

However, the chances of this happening are now “close to zero” after the scenes in Madrid.

Outgoing Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel has not held back his assessment of Marciniak, accusing him of breaking “all the rules”.

Tuchel said after full-time: “I think it’s quite clear and (there) can be, in my opinion, no doubt that this goes against all the rules of modern football.

“The first big mistake came from the linesman, he did it during an action in overtime, during an action with Alphonso Davies, he did it too, he raised his flag straight away.

Fans stunned after seeing Champions League final referee’s bizarre dressing room routine in never-before-seen footage

“I don’t know if he was offside. I had a strange feeling. Raising your flag in a situation like this when you can never be sure if it’s offside -game, having the courage to raise the flag in a situation like this is a huge call and it’s the wrong call.

“The referee has a chance. When he sees that we win the second ball, we win the rebound and we take the shot away within five seconds, he has the option not to whistle. He makes the decision to whistle – it’s against all the rules.

“We recognize that we lost. That’s how it is, but it wouldn’t have happened on the other side.”
