Doireann Garrihy breaks silence after announcing shock departure from RTE 2FM

RTE star Doireann Garrihy said she was “puzzled” by the reaction to news she was leaving 2FM after five years.

On Wednesday morning, Garrihy announced she would be leaving the station after five years hosting the breakfast show.

She told her Instagram followers that the reaction to her news was “phenomenal”.

The 31-year-old said: “I just wanted to say a big thank you too for all the messages over the last few days. It’s so funny, sometimes you can be so perplexed by the support.

“I know there are such lovely supporters, but until you announce something like this, a big change or a new business, only then do you see how many people are behind you and supporting you and that has been phenomenal during this period in recent days.

“Thank you so much. It’s such a great feeling to know that people are supporting you and saying ‘go for it’.”

On Wednesday, Doireann shocked her colleagues when she released a statement announcing she was leaving RTE 2FM.

“After 5 years of 2FM Breakfast, it’s time to embark on new adventures,” she said.

“Donncha and Carl, I have found in you two brothers for life.

“What an explosion of craziness, ridiculous immaturity and lifelong bonding. Anyone would be lucky enough to work with a gentleman any day, I was beyond lucky to work with two.

“To the loyal listeners of 2FM, through thick and thin, you have been there. Your support has meant everything. There hasn’t been a day I haven’t gotten out of bed at 5am. Thank you for having welcomed with open ears in 2019 and every day since Producer Grace, you are a boss, a queen, a friend for life, it was an absolute pleasure meeting me in 2019 and taking my. luck. I’m so glad you did.

“Now it’s time for my podcasts Doireann and Friends and The Laughs Of Your Life, to travel, to give more to the people who have been on this journey with me since the viral impressions video of 2016 and to continue the projects I ‘have what we dreamed of, as we would say to our lovely on-air interlocutors, good luck and thank you.’

Doireann will present her final 2FM Breakfast Show with Doireann, Donncha and Carl on RTÉ 2FM on Friday May 31.

Dan Healy, Director of RTÉ 2FM, said: “Doireann is an exceptional broadcaster and has been a very important part of the 2FM team. Everyone at the station is sorry to hear that she has decided to leave. I’m very proud of the breakfast show. that Doireann presented with Donncha and Carl which was adored by the public and which was very successful in the JNLR.

“Personally, I’m sorry to see her go, but I respect Doireann’s decision. I wish her the best in everything she does going forward. Doireann leaves 2FM in good shape and we look forward to building on the success breakfast show during the summer months and beyond.
