Ohio Valley middle school student prepares to make it count in MATHCOUNTS competition

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) — Peilin Yu, a bright seventh grader at Triadelphia Middle School, has qualified to compete in the national MATHCOUNTS competition.

The competition will include sprint, target, team and countdown events.

Answering the problems can take between eight minutes and an hour, depending on the number of questions in each round.

Yu says she uses practice problems to prepare for the big day.

“I think it’s a great opportunity because, you know, it’s at the national level so there will be a lot of different mathematicians there, so I think I’ll learn a lot at this competition, so I’m Really excited.”

Peilin Yu, MATHCOUNTS qualifier

Yu says she is grateful to her parents and coaches for pushing her to succeed in math.

The MATHCOUNTS competition will be held in Washington, DC, on May 12-13.

Good luck to Yu representing Ohio County and West Virginia schools.
