New York officials consider virtual learning to reduce class sizes

ACROSS THE CITY — NYC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OFFICIALS are considering a number of ways to reduce class sizes to respond to a new state mandate, and a strategy under study is virtual learning, educational publication Chalkbeat reported. In a plan released this week, the DOE suggested that some students could “receive regular remote instruction, potentially reducing overall impacts on space in schools.” Virtual learning would only be one option, the city added. By law, academic classes must not exceed between 20 and 25 students, depending on grade level.

More than 300,000 students in high-needs schools are in overcrowded classrooms, a study finds. UFT study reported by City & State in November 2023.
