Will the NYPD stop these traffic terrorists before they kill someone?

Will the NYPD stop these traffic terrorists before they kill someone?

Another accident involving “swimmers” in New York occurred recently on the Belt Parkway.

  • Unsurprisingly, a reckless driver in New York City caused an accident while trying to weave through traffic.
  • Another vehicle in the reckless group captured the multi-car crash on a rear-facing camera.
  • Despite several accidents and several attempts to contact him, the New York Police Department has said nothing about this dangerous trend.

Reckless high-speed drivers in New York have caused another senseless crash, this time involving a BMW M3. The recent trend of “swimming” or “weaving” through traffic at high speeds appears to be gaining momentum, with accidents increasing. The pressing question remains: What is the NYPD actually doing about this dangerous practice? The evidence suggests very little action.

The latest crash occurred on Belt Parkway, the same spot where a BMW M5 and a Chevrolet Corvette collided this week, sending both vehicles into flames and a driver hospitalized with injuries.

In this latest incident, the driver of the BMW M3, part of a group of “swimmers” recklessly maneuvering in high-speed traffic, attempted to change lanes where there was insufficient space. Subsequently, the vehicle spun out of control and collided with the wall.

According to those who were driving before the accident, they did not realize the accident had occurred until until long afterward. Instead, they continued to drive recklessly for several minutes, while documenting their actions on dashboard camera footage.

Here is the real heart of the problem. This account and several others like it, some of which we have highlighted in the past, highlight precisely this type of conduct. On top of that, they glorify the trolling of the NYPD. One way or another, in all the cases we’ve seen so far, the NYPD does almost nothing to arrest the individuals in question. The police flash their lights and sirens and sometimes chase them for a short time, but the chase ends fairly quickly.

In fact, the alarming lack of willingness of the NYPD to pursue these suspects is a factor that one notable attendee cited as a reason he is confident in fleeing. Speaking about these cops, he told a YouTuber in an interview: “They’re not really made for that (high speeds), there’s a lot of real rookie cops at the moment…. and these guys don’t know how to drive on the highway.

Perhaps the craziest thing about all of this is that we’re not talking about a department well known for its passive policies. The NYPD is the same department that had multiple questionable interactions with people on mopeds last year. It’s the same one that gives tickets to citizens who denounce the cops’ illegal parking. How did he apparently come to the decision to not only let these drivers do what they want, but also to remain silent on this issue?

It should be noted that the evidence suggests that pursuing a suspect is, on average, more dangerous to the public than not pursuing them. After all, officers have several methods of tracking and apprehending suspects without putting others at such high risk.

In the vast majority of cases, this is probably the most prudent solution. In this case, where several individuals repeat this behavior and encourage others to follow suit, it would seem that the interest in catching the perpetrators is higher. Clearly, they are putting the public at risk every time they drive like this.

No response from the New York police

Carscoops contacted several NYPD officials, including the public relations department, heads of various task forces and individual officers. As of this writing, none have responded. It will be interesting to see what happens first.

Will the NYPD actually crack down on this behavior or will someone get seriously hurt or even die as a result?
