Game Changer Finale Delayed, Emmy Eligible, Season 7 Writers Room Opens

Game Changer Finale Delayed, Emmy Eligible, Season 7 Writers Room Opens

Filming on the seventh season of the hit independent streaming series will begin by the end of summer.

The two-part finale of Dropout’s hit game series, “Game Changer,” originally scheduled for May 20, has been delayed “to allow more time for editing.”

On Monday, Sam Reich, host and CEO of Dropout, announced on social media: “Schedule update: We are pushing back the two-part Game Changer season finale to allow more time in editing. This is one of the most complicated episodes we’ve ever done (you’ll see why). Part one will now launch on Dropout on June 3 and part two on June 17.

Despite the delay, the sixth season, which consisted of seven episodes, exceeds the minimum six-episode requirement for submission in the Outstanding Game Show category. Under current Emmy rules, the two-part finale will compete as part of the upcoming seventh season when it airs during the next eligibility window. This is consistent with other competition and game shows with multiple seasons competing as one, such as Netflix’s “Is It Cake,” vying for Outstanding Reality Competition Program, with a combined second season, airing in June 2023 , and its third season in March 2024. .

In addition to the game show category, “Game Changer” also submitted nominations for Outstanding Host (Reich) and Picture Editing for Variety Programming for the 2024 Emmys.

In an upcoming interview, Reich exclusively tells Variety that the upcoming season’s writers’ room, which includes Reich, Paul Robalino, Chloe Badner (also the show’s production designer) and Ryan Creamer, is expected to open in the coming weeks.

“We’re coming with a lot of ammunition,” Reich says. “Every season of ‘Game Changer’ feels like we’re getting further into a dead end where it becomes harder and harder to be original. The benefit is that we get to know the show better and have more resources to produce it over time.

Filming for the next season is expected to begin by the end of summer, with season 7 expected to premiere in the fall. But don’t worry, Dropout fans; it doesn’t appear they’re close to finishing the innovative series, with Reich exclaiming, “I’ll keep doing this series until someone or something stops me.”

The indie streamer’s standout series, formerly known as College Humor, doesn’t follow the traditional game show format. Each episode features a new game, with the twist that the three competing comedians have no idea of the rules until the game begins.

On Friday, May 17, Dropout will air the inaugural season finale of its remarkable short-form series, “Very Important People.” Host Vic Michaelis will feature “Game Changer” executive producer and “Dimension 20” host Brennan Lee Mulligan transforming into “Augbert,” an apparently caveman-like character based on the released image .

As part of the company’s overall digital strategy, they are slowly moving into the awards space, hoping to further develop their content over the next year. New series like “Smartypants,” the hilarious “PowerPoint” Q&A presentation starring host Rekha Shankar that airs every two weeks, will be eligible for the 2025 Emmy schedule.

Reich and Mulligan serve as executive producers on the multi-camera show alongside David Kerns, Adam Frucci, Kyle Rohrbach, Chloe Badner, Justin Cyrul and Paul Robalino.
