Justice Alito Waving American Flag Upside Down, ‘Stop the Steal’ Symbol, After 2020 Election: Report

A new report found that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito flew an upside-down American flag – a symbol adopted by Donald Trump supporters contesting Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory – outside his home in 2021.

A photo of the toppled flag, reportedly seen at Alito’s Alexandria, Virginia, residence in January, was obtained by The New York Times and included in the article published Thursday.

It is not yet clear how long the flag was flown in front of his house.

“I had no involvement in the display of the flag,” Alito told the Times. “It was briefly placed by Ms. Alito in response to a neighbor’s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on street signs.”

The finding is likely to intensify calls for the 74-year-old judge to recuse himself from several major cases currently before the court, including one involving whether Trump can claim immunity in the attack January 6, 2021 against the US Capitol.

Alito is considered one of the court’s most conservative justices and played a significant role in overturning Roe v. Wade in 2021.

In the wake of former President Donald Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election, some of his supporters adopted an upside-down American flag as a symbol of their “Stop the Steal” movement, which falsely claimed that President Biden had stole the race.

Justice Clarence Thomas also faced calls for recusal in election-related cases after his wife admitted supporting efforts to challenge the election results and attending Trump’s rally before the Capitol attack .

Thomas called the accusations against him “viciousness” and “lies” at a recent conference in Alabama.

Both Thomas and Alito have faced scrutiny for allegedly failing to disclose certain travel and expenses during their tenure on the nation’s highest court.
