In the days following Rory McIlroy’s shocking split from wife Erica Stoll, their neighbors in the Florida golf community where they live are blindsided by the divorce.

McIlroy filed for divorce from Stoll on Monday, three days before the start of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

The split was confirmed by McIlroy’s representatives on Tuesday and he was seen training for the major just hours later.

On Wednesday, Stoll was seen publicly for the first time since the news broke in Florida, without a wedding ring on her finger.

Stoll is believed to still live in the couple’s lavish mansion in Jupiter, Florida, with their three-year-old daughter Poppy Kennedy. And their neighbors are trying to figure out where things went wrong, via PEOPLE.

“Rory is pretty down-to-earth for such a big star,” a source told PEOPLE. “However, he is very private and can be nice to be around, but he just does NOT like the limelight.”

McIlroy and Stoll live in the fertile, guard-gated golfing community of Bear’s Club, where PEOPLE learned from another source that their neighbors were “talking about it and wondering what happened.”

McIlroy, 35, remains tight-lipped about his private life, “so private that there hasn’t been much speculation regarding his family life,” PEOPLE added. “We wonder what happened.”

The couple met in 2012 while McIlroy was still dating tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. Months after McIlroy ended things with Wozniacki, he and Stoll were an item.

Stoll and McIlroy, now 36, got engaged in 2015 and married in 2017.

Halfway through the PGA Championship, McIlroy is five under par, seven strokes behind leader Xander Schauffele.

Stoll has largely remained out of the public eye despite his relationship with one of the most famous golfers on the planet. Her Instagram was made private before the divorce filing.

Now, Stoll has been thrust into the spotlight as she splits from McIlroy.
