$386 for a $109 room? NYC Properties Charge Higher Fees Than Any Hotel

We finally found it: the hotel with the most egregious extra charges in the country. All other hotels can stop trying, because the 31 Street Broadway Hotel in New York can’t be beat.

In addition to the room rate, they charge:

  • 49% destination charge
  • 47% Bed Linen Fee
  • $120.00 property service fee per stay

Their mandatory fee is 96% of the room rate more $120. Normally, it is claimed that destination (or resort) fees include certain “benefits.” Here they don’t suggest you get anything other than staying at your destination. This is usually what the room rate is for.

And what does your room rate cover? Not the sheets on the bed, apparently. These are supplements – 47% more.

As a result, a $109 room actually costs $386.87 – plus a $175 security deposit.

Even though the room is advertised as $109, if you cancel you will pay $158.73.

Rooms not reserved on the day are advertised at just $45. Why not when they will charge you $243?

Even considering the photos on the web of this place and knowing the total price, guests still rate their stay as “disappointing” according to Booking.com:

Maybe that’s why? Think the property service fee covers the property’s pest control services?
