Manchester City still face 115 charges over alleged financial violations, but former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer does not believe that takes anything away from the achievements of the manager and his players.

“No, that shouldn’t be the case for these players. It’s not their fault,” he said on Match of the Day. “They just have to go out and play on the football field.

“The club will have to answer for the accusations, but these players have been superb and nothing can be taken away from what they have achieved.”

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright added: “The resulting uncertainty is unfair to the legacy these players are building.

“I was watching them again in that Treble documentary. You watch them and their drive and determination to try and do what they did is incredible.

“It’s unfair that they have all this around them, so the sooner they can get this result the better.”

Shearer also discussed Pep Guardiola’s comment that he was closer to leaving Manchester City than completing seven more years of service at the club.

The Spanish coach’s contract is due to expire at the end of next season, but Shearer doesn’t think Guardiola will go anywhere if he keeps winning trophies.

“You can understand his comments. We saw what Jurgen Klopp did because of the difficulty of the job, the pressure you are under and the impact it has on you as an individual,” he said. declared.

“Everyone will wish he was gone but, even if he continues to win, he will be here to stay a little longer.”
