The Playhouse opens the season with “Silent Sky” |  News, Sports, Jobs

The cast and crew of the McConnellstown Playhouse present “Silent Sky” June 7-16.

McCONNELLSTOWN — The McConnellstown Playhouse will present “Silent Sky” by renowned playwright Lauren Gunderson. This captivating drama will be on stage from June 7 to 16.

“Silent Sky” tells the story of Henrietta Leavitt, a pioneering astronomer whose groundbreaking discoveries revolutionized our understanding of the universe. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing world, the play explores Leavitt’s journey as she fights against societal norms and personal challenges to pursue her passion for the stars.

Directed by Keith Sutton, the production promises to captivate audiences with its blend of scientific intrigue, heartfelt drama and timeless themes of perseverance and the quest for knowledge. With its captivating characters and poignant storytelling, “Silent Sky” invites audiences to travel through the cosmos and witness the awe-inspiring wonder of discovery.

“Since my teenage years, I have had a keen interest in astronomy” Sutton commented. “Running this show gave me a great opportunity to reignite that interest and delve deeper into the history of astrophysics from the early 20th century, an era in which humanity was first able to obtain meaningful measurements of the true size of the universe and a clearer understanding. of our place in it.

Featuring a talented cast and crew, unique set design and immersive lighting and soundscapes, “Silent Sky” promises to be an unforgettable theatrical experience for audiences of all ages. Henrietta Leavitt is played by Meghan Whitesel. Henrietta’s sister, Margaret, is played by Kylee Roles. Anita Burkhart is Annie Cannon and Jeanne Nagurny is Williamina Flemming. Peter Shaw is played by Clay Glenny.

“I am delighted to be part of this production” Whitesel said. “This script was recommended to me almost ten years ago, and a group of us did a virtual table read while we were in the dark during Covid. I was excited when he landed in our 2024 season.”

The creative team for the show is made up of Sutton with Olivia Cooley as stage manager. Scenic design is by Don Dietz with sound design by Dan Weston and lighting design by Sutton. Barb Hughes provides technical assistance.

“From time to time, we produce a show that allows us to showcase our technical abilities. “Silent Sky” is one of these productions. » added Whitesel. “As I learn more about the lights and sound of this show, I would love to be able to see an audience performance, just so I can enjoy the technical components. The theater experience is not limited to the performances of the actors. I am delighted that our audience will be able to experience this production in its entirety.

“Silent Sky” opens June 7 and continues
