From the confines of the Canadian North, in the Northwest Territories, in Yellowknife prime (Best New Single at the 2022 Music NWT Awards) Gnarval present their doom stoner sludge rock sound to the general public with their upcoming EP “Altered States” release scheduled for May 24, 2024.

Unveiling of singles “Tides” and the EP’s highlight tracks in recent weeks, the quartet gears up with their latest preview of the release with “The War/Nothing More”which are actually two songs that the band wrote at completely different times and thought would work well together.

Guitarist Benji Straker comments:

“I wrote The War shortly after finishing recording our first album. At the same time, I was writing the music for my EP project Hughes, so the lyrics and thematics fit perfectly with that. Once I finished it, I released it as a solo acoustic version on the Here I Am EP. The demo for Nothing More was written shortly after and musically it draws on my post- classic hardcore/punk. I think Refused would be the main driver of the beat on this track.

Singer Mark Kilbride adds:

In Nothing More, I love the lyrics: “Shed your skin to make it”. This part is about working day in and day out, wanting something so bad that you’re willing to do anything just to get it. Pushing your own limits, knowing that you are putting time and effort into your vision. “Again, you can’t fake it”: be authentic. To be whole, this character must believe in this process and be present in the delivery of the songs.

The group’s second album, “Altered States” promises to deliver a diverse and introspective musical journey in which the band artfully navigates the realms of alternative heavy fuzz rock and progressive metal, creating a sound all their own.

“We hope that our progression as a band and as songwriters pleases our fans and listeners. The Altered States EP is a little darker and maybe heavier than our first one. Conceptually and thematically, the songs on the EP fit better as a whole and we hope this will foster a two-sided experience for listeners. Staker said.

Recommended for fans of Kyuss, Mastodon and Elder, “Altered States” is due out on May 24, 2024 and is available for pre-order on gnarwhalband.bandcamp.com
