Rio Vista Police Chief Jon Mazer announced May 22 that he will retire effective November 1.

Rio Vista Police Chief Jon Mazer announced Wednesday that he will retire effective November 1.

“My tenure as Chief of Police for the City of Rio Vista has been the highlight of my 33-year career in law enforcement, and it has truly been a dream come true,” Mazer said. “The support and warmth this community has given me is second to none, and it is with a heavy heart that I prepare to say goodbye.”

Mazer said when he first took over as chief in 2021, Rio Vista was grappling with the challenges of the COVID-29 pandemic, the police department was experiencing many vacancies and recent history of the city was tumultuous.

“However, thanks to your continued support, our community has flourished, allowing our officers to excel in their roles,” Mazer said. “It is thanks to your encouragement that we were able to make significant arrests, including apprehending several individuals identified as murder suspects and even one for attempted homicide by other law enforcement.”

Mazer said the next police chief will be chosen from among his “esteemed colleagues” by Rio Vista City Manager Kristina Miller, and although November seems far away, he believes these next few months will be crucial in providing sufficient notice to to ensure a smooth transition for Miller and the Solano County Sheriff’s Office leadership team to select a successor.

“I will be honored to pass the baton to them, knowing that they will be entering an extraordinary city and community,” Mazer said. “I am grateful for the privilege of serving as your police chief, and I thank each of you for your continued support and partnership.”

Even though retirement is only a few months away, Mazer said various projects and challenges loom on the horizon, ranging from administrative tasks to structural considerations such as the future of our police facilities.
