At 106, two World War II veterans meet in Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — It’s not every day you meet a 106-year-old World War II veteran — but this week, two of them met.

Robert Holt was on the Mid-Michigan Honor Flight in Washington, DC, earlier this month. He served in Germany and during his first mission his truck hit a land mine and exploded. Holt was ejected from the truck but was not injured.

Irene Hosking was supposed to be part of the Mid-Michigan Honor Flight, but she didn’t feel up to it. She was a nurse and served in Australia.

This week, the two men – born just 10 days apart in April 1918 – met in Owosso. They shared a few laughs and talked about life at that time.

“Do you remember your first car with a starter? » Holt recalled. “Turn it on, run to get in, and then it starts.”

The two men ended up talking for almost two hours.
