Delaware State Police Memorial Day Message – Delaware State Police

As Memorial Day approaches, many of us gather with our loved ones to honor our fallen heroes. The Delaware State Police are here to remind everyone of the importance of driving safely, especially this weekend, but also every day.

Memorial Day often marks the “unofficial” start of summer, meaning traffic is expected to increase, making it all the more crucial for us to take responsibility for our safety and the safety of others. The Delaware State Police will actively enforce traffic laws and provide assistance to drivers in need. Our troopers aim to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injury crashes during this unofficial start to summer by focusing on distracted driving, unrestrained motorists, impaired drivers and behavior aggressive driving. We invite you to do your part by being responsible drivers.

To ensure safe travel over the holiday weekend, follow these simple steps:

  • Tame your inner speed demon
  • Buckle up and make sure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up as well.
  • Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Designate a sober driver, call a sober friend, call a sober family member, or use a rideshare service
  • If you spot a drunk or aggressive driver on the road, contact 911 immediately.
  • If someone you know is about to drive impaired, take their keys and help them find a safe way home.
  • Eliminate driving distractions such as texting
  • Be aware of increased pedestrian and bicycle traffic by yielding the right of way to pedestrians and sharing the road responsibly

REMEMBERone wrong decision can have life-altering consequences, so drive safely, be responsible, and have a memorable and meaningful Memorial Day.
