Fishing competitions, kayak lessons offered in the Alliance sector

Those who enjoy fishing and outdoor activities on the water will have plenty of opportunities this summer, thanks to Stark Parks.

Residents of eastern Stark County can participate in activities at Walborn Reservoir and Deer Creek Reservoir, both located in the Alliance Region.

The Ranger Bass Boat Tournament at Walborn Reservoir will take place June 15. Individuals or in partnership, anglers will have a limit of five largemouth or smallmouth bass. Registration will take place on the day of the event. The cost is $60 per boat, cash only.

Registration begins at 6 a.m. and fishing will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The weigh-in will take place at 3 p.m. Cash prizes will follow. All state and local laws apply. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Stark Parks Ranger Explorer program, which trains the next generation of leaders in law enforcement.

Two sessions of the Catfish with Cops inshore fishing tournament will be held, July 27 at Walborn Reservoir and Aug. 24 at Sippo Lake Marina in Perry Township. Entrance fee is $5 per person and registration is at 5 p.m. for both events.

Led by experienced instructors, this beginner’s course at 6 p.m. June 26 at Deer Creek Reservoir is designed for people who want to explore the fundamentals of kayaking. Starting on land, participants will learn the essentials of trip planning, types of paddling equipment, and key safety practices when paddling. No prior experience is necessary. All necessary equipment will be provided. Dress prepared to possibly get wet. Registration is required. The cost is $15 for Stark County residents and $20 for out-of-county residents.
