Residents of Umm Al Quwain (UAQ) have expressed their dissatisfaction over the heavy electricity bills they received in August this year.
Some residents complain about their electricity bills increasing by 80 to 120 percent. “Electricity bills have never been higher despite previous consumption during the same summer months in recent years.”
Ibrahim Al Qasim, an Algerian living in the Salma region, said he was shocked when he received the electricity bill for August.
“For the first time in my 10-year stay in the UAE, I had to pay Dh1,000 on my electricity bill,” he said. “My average consumption has never exceeded 500 to 600 Dh.”
Al Qasim thought there was something wrong and contacted the relevant official at the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa).
“They said there was nothing wrong and that was my electricity usage for the month of August.”
Reiterating the same, Adnan Abdul Basit, a Jordanian resident, said he had to pay Dh800 on his August electricity bill. “It’s too much, I always pay a maximum of 400 Dh.”
When approached, Fewa claimed the bills were correct and truly reflected people’s consumption during the month of August, which was reported as “the highest consumption in years”.
Consumers are urged to rationalize their consumption, they said.
Mohammed Saleh, chief executive of Fewa, attributed the rise in bills to increased consumption during the summer months and urged people to be more conscious of their consumption.
“Records show that electricity consumption in July was higher than in June and August was the highest.”
Official records show that Fewa’s electricity consumers reached 300,000, while water consumers stood at 270,000.
