20 office trains canceled as railway strike continues

At least 20 office trains were also canceled today due to the strike called by the Sri Lanka Railways Locomotive Operating Engineers Union, the Railways Ministry said.

Meanwhile, it was reported that more than 50 planned train journeys were canceled yesterday (09) due to the continued strike action.

The union action launched by the Union of Locomotive Operating Mechanics continues today (10) for the fourth consecutive day.

They have been on strike since midnight on Thursday June 6 over several key demands, including solutions to delays in second-class promotions of locomotive drivers, delays in the recruitment process and several other issues.

It is also mentioned that only locomotive drivers from two of the five running sheds have so far joined the strike and as a result no trains will operate.

Meanwhile, SRCM union secretary Senanayake warned yesterday that if the authorities did not respond to their demands, they would take measures to intensify their industrial action.
