Hearts of Oak coach shocked by team’s improved performance against Great Olympics

Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara has expressed surprise at his team’s performance in their crucial Ghana Premier League clash against Great Olympics on Sunday.

The match, which many expected Hearts of Oak to lose, ended in a goalless draw, giving the Phobians a lifeline as they head into the final round of matches.

The draw leaves Hearts of Oak with a fighting chance to avoid relegation in the 2023/24 season.

Reacting to the result, Ouattara reflected on what could have been a more successful campaign if his team had consistently performed as they did against the Great Olympics.

“I asked myself the same question. If we had played all our matches like tonight, we wouldn’t have found ourselves in this situation, but that’s football,” Ouattara said.

Currently in 14th place with 42 points, just two points above the relegation zone, Hearts of Oak face a must-win situation in their final match.

Ouattara is determined to ensure the survival of his team. “We’ll try now.” The future is in our hands (and those of our legs), not anyone else’s. We will start preparation on Tuesday and fight together for victory and qualify (survive),” he said.

Hearts of Oak must win their final match against Bechem United on Sunday to avoid relegation. This is the second season in a row that they have found themselves in a similar situation. Last season, they needed a victory over Berekum Chelsea to secure their place in the league.

In the current standings, Karela is in 13th place with 43 points, followed by Hearts of Oak and Dreams FC, both with 42 points. Dreams FC, however, has a game in hand. Great Olympics are in 16th place with 41 points and risk joining Bofoakwa Tano and Real Tamale United, already relegated.

Karela is also not out of danger and must defeat Medeama on the final day to ensure her safety.

As the final day of the season approaches, the fate of several historic clubs hangs in the balance. Fans and players alike eagerly await the results of these crucial matches, which will determine who remains in the elite and who faces the drop.
