Alvin ISD trustees to consider adopting budget for fiscal year 2024-25, calling for bond election

The Alvin ISD Board of Trustees will consider adopting the district’s budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year at its June 11 meeting.

The overview

AISD expects $366.6 million in revenue and expenses. That total is nearly $7 million more than last year’s revenues and expenses, according to district documents.

Although the additional revenue can almost all be attributed to the anticipated 700 new students, the majority of that money will go toward recruiting and opening two new schools, as well as replacing another in the fall, according to district officials.

A growing expense for the district is personnel, on which AISD officials expect to spend $18.4 million more this year than last year, documents show. Of this amount, nearly $7.7 million will be devoted to a 3% cost-of-living adjustment.

Much of the rest is dedicated to staffing two new schools — Iowa Colony Junior High School and Barbara Bennett Elementary School — that will open in the fall, documents show.

What else?

The board will also consider calling an election for a new bond, which could be worth about $380.1 million, according to a presentation from the district’s Citizens Advisory Committee.

Daniel Combs, AISD assistant superintendent and chief financial officer, said the bond would traditionally be used to help fund new or expanding schools.

Although district officials say the bond could contribute to the growth seen in the district, funding for maintenance is difficult to include in the bond, forcing officials to include those funds in the district’s regular operating budget. Maintenance costs were one of the top expenses in the budget, with $600,000 allocated to maintenance and operations expenses, according to district documents.
