Hamas accepts UN ceasefire resolution, ready to negotiate details, official says

RAMALLAH, West Bank: Hamas said one of its commanders in the occupied West Bank was killed in a clash with Israeli forces.
In a statement released Monday evening, Hamas said Mohammed Jaber Abdo was killed along with three other fighters in a village near Ramallah, where the headquarters of the Western-backed Palestinian Authority is located.
A joint statement from the Israeli army and police said Monday that undercover forces had tracked down a suspect wanted in connection with an attack on a nearby Jewish settlement.
Violence has increased in the West Bank since the start of the Gaza war, sparked by the October 7 Hamas attack in southern Israel.
Since then, more than 530 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in the West Bank, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Most were killed during violent protests or Israeli arrest raids, which often trigger shootings.

Four Israeli soldiers killed in southern Gaza

The Israeli military said Tuesday that four soldiers were killed the day before in fighting in southern Gaza, more than eight months after the start of its war against Hamas militants.
The soldiers were “killed during fighting in southern Gaza” on Monday, the army said in a statement, without giving details of the circumstances of their death.
Israeli public broadcaster Kan said the soldiers were killed in an explosion at a building in the town of Rafah, in the far south of Gaza.
The latest deaths bring the army’s total losses to 298 since the start of its ground offensive in Gaza on October 27, he said.

UN Security Council adopts resolution on Gaza

Earlier Monday, the U.N. Security Council overwhelmingly approved a U.S. resolution that welcomes a proposed ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza has killed more than 36,730 people, according to Gaza’s health ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians in its tally. Palestinians face widespread hunger because the war has largely interrupted the supply of food, medicine and other supplies. UN agencies say more than a million people in Gaza could experience the highest level of famine by mid-July.
Israel launched the war after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, in which militants stormed into southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and kidnapping about 250.
