Have. Family says washing machine door suddenly broke

An Ontario woman was shocked to find glass strewn across her laundry room floor after the door to her front-loading washing machine suddenly exploded earlier this month.

“I was sleeping and the window was exploding so loud that I thought it was a car crash outside,” Laycee Hepworth told CTV News Toronto in an interview.

When she came downstairs, she saw that the glass door of her front-loading washing machine had shattered, leaving glass everywhere. Her husband cut his foot when he stepped on a shard of glass on the floor.

“There was a trace of blood where my husband was cut, which was shocking to see,” she said, adding that her two young children and two dogs were fortunately unharmed. .

“There were not only large pieces of glass, there were also small, very sharp pieces of glass. I’m just happy because it could have been a lot worse.”

It’s not clear why the glass broke, but there are concerns if you leave coins, belts, or other hard objects in a washer, they could cause nicks and scratches that could weaken the glass of the washing machine doors over time.

When Hepworth contacted Samsung Canada, the company said it would replace the door free of charge, even though the three-year-old device was no longer under warranty.

Hepworth told Samsung that she was not comfortable with the same model. She wrote to the company: “I see shards of glass inside the machine. I have two young children and I don’t want to be afraid of washing their clothes.”

It’s rare for a glass door to break on a front-load washer, but it does happen.

When CTV News contacted Samsung Canada, a spokesperson told us that “customer satisfaction is a top priority.”

“We are aware of this issue and are working with the customer to find an amicable resolution,” the statement said.

In the end, Samsung agreed to give Hepworth a brand new washing machine, which was great news for her.

“Thank you to CTV News for helping me resolve this issue. I’m certainly glad you contacted you,” Hepworth said.
