Fifty Labor Party members from a north-east London constituency have resigned from the party, citing the treatment of their former candidate Faiza Shaheen.

Ms Shaheen was de-selected by the Labor Party after she liked a series of posts on X which allegedly downplayed allegations of anti-Semitism. She is now standing as an independent candidate in the Chingford and Woodford Green constituency.

A letter published on

The BBC has contacted the constituency party and the Labor Party for comment.

The 50 former Labor members said: “The deselection was carried out in a manner contrary to natural justice or any due process.

“It was inhumane and degrading and based on spurious motives.

“What is particularly egregious is the fact that historic tweets when Faiza was not even a member of the party are being used against her, while in recent weeks Labor has been happy to admit in his parliamentary party conservative MPs who have odious opinions which have been expressed repeatedly until very recently.

Signatories to the letter include the constituency’s joint campaign coordinators, Mick Moore and Sarah Chaney, as well as a Redbridge councillor, Rosa Gomez.

They say they will campaign against the new Labor Party candidate in the constituency, Shama Tatler, and will “do everything in their power to support Faiza in her bid to become an independent MP”.

The full list of candidates in Chingford and Woodford Green is as follows (in alphabetical order):

Iain Duncan Smith, Conservative Party

Josh Hadley, Liberal Democrat

Yousaff Khan, Workers’ Party
