Jade Holt aims for whimsy, weirdness and cartoon inspiration – Post Bulletin

Born in Las Vegas but raised in Rochester since the age of 3, Jade Holt’s local roots run deep.

She is a recent graduate of Century High School, a three-year Trader Joe’s employee, and the daughter of the owner of Sacred Heart Studios, a Rochester-based tattoo shop.

“I grew up in a family of artists and spend almost all my free time creating art in all forms,” she says. “I make my own costumes and some clothing, create digital artwork, and dabble in creative writing.”

Summarize your style.

Fantasy and weird. I’m often told that my unique style makes me look confident and that I inspire others to wear what makes them happy too.

What makes your style unique?

I love unique patterns and styles. I love to pair even my most basic outfits with statement, bold jewelry and bright, fun makeup.

Life motto?

“If I’m going to feel like trash, I’m not going to look like trash.” It’s a motto I made for myself in middle school and eventually became my senior quote (earning me the title of “best dressed” as a senior superlative at Century).

Describe your typical approach to choosing an outfit on a given day.

I often like to imagine what a cartoon character would wear. I opt for a lot of monochrome outfits and try to create fun silhouettes by adding layers and fun accessories that stand out and hopefully make someone smile.

How would you describe the Rochester style scene?

I’ve seen an increase in unique styles and not just clothing: more trendy hair colors and more obvious tattoos and piercings. Along with that, I feel like I’m seeing the growth of vintage clothing in the city, and I love it. I’m so happy to see stores like Vintage Rack and Kismet thriving.

Any ideas on buying second-hand?

I am an advocate of recycling, reuse and good business.

Best thrifty find?

My best find by far is a pair of floral print boots I stumbled across in Savers. I wear them to work almost every day and constantly get compliments.

One or more sentimental items?

My costume collection. I love costumes and have made a lot of my own clothes based on cartoon characters.

The most surprising thing in your wardrobe?

My “all-terrain dress”. This is an old bridesmaid dress that I salvaged and took on an adventure. I wanted something beautiful that I can wear when I want to play in muddy puddles, paint, or hike in the woods. My goal is to wear it until it’s destroyed because I’ve always believed that if I can’t make a dress, I’m just not doing it well.

What do you frequently reach for?

I often find myself looking for a petticoat. It’s a petticoat that adds volume to my skirts for a touch of magic.

Best accessory purchase you’ve ever made?

A bright pastel handbag in the shape of a vintage corded telephone. I can connect it to my phone and take calls on it, which makes it the perfect type of unique piece.

What is the object that you cannot part with?

My blonde wig. This was the first wig I purchased, which has resulted in quite a large collection that I use for costumes and random daily wear.

Fill in the blank: I feel most “me” when I wear ____.

A fluffy skirt and big earrings.

Fill in the blank: You will never catch me wearing _____.

Jeans.

Parting thoughts or advice?

Dress every day in something you love and express yourself in everything you do.
