Leeds head coach Rohan Smith has described the inspiration his side have drawn from the tributes which continue to pour in for Rob Burrow since his death following a valiant battle with motor neurone disease ago almost two weeks.

The Rhinos men’s team take to the field for the first time since Burrow’s passing against Hull at MKM Stadium on Saturday, with the hosts planning a series of special tributes to the star scrum-half.

“It’s been a really difficult time for the staff and players, particularly those who have worked closely with Rob, or played or coached alongside him,” Smith admitted.

“It’s been a difficult thing for people to deal with, but it’s also a moment of great reflection and honoring the legacy he left during his career and after his career.

“We have all been inspired during our time at the Rhinos by what Rob did on the field in defying the odds and leaving a legacy, and after his career too, seeing the battle he fought for good from others, it has inspired us all.

“We can’t wait to get out there and begin the tribute from the Rhinos’ perspective to Rob and Lindsey and their family.”

Burrow was remembered with a series of tributes before and during the Betfred Challenge Cup final day last Saturday at Wembley, in which the Leeds women’s team were beaten by St Helens.

And those tributes will continue at MKM Stadium before and during the match, including a minute’s silence and a minute’s applause in the seventh minute, in recognition of Burrow’s long-standing jersey number.

A video of Burrow’s life and achievements will be shown on the big screen as the teams take to the field, before Burrow’s former teammate Liam Sutcliffe and Rhinos captain Cameron Smith lay wreaths at the edge ground.

Bucket drives will be held to benefit the new Rob Burrow Center for Motor Neurone Disease, and Hull will wear special warm-up shorts that will then be signed and auctioned off.
