Historical significance

Nestled on the India-Bangladesh border in the Malda district of Bengal, Singhabad Railway Station bears witness to a rich history. Established during the British era, it served as a vital link between Calcutta and Dhaka, facilitating travel and trade during India’s struggle for independence. Personalities like Subhash Chandra Bose and Mahatma Gandhi passed through his platforms, leaving an indelible mark on his legacy.

Architectural Heritage

The architecture of the station, a relic of colonial India, bears witness to its rich past. The colonial-era structures, signage systems and ticket counters evoke nostalgia for a time when Singhabad was bustling. Despite the silence that now envelops it, these remains retain a historical imprint on Indian railway infrastructure.

Singhabad in modern times

After India’s independence and the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, the role of Singhabad changed considerably. Once a hub for passenger trains, it has become mainly intended for the transport of goods. A 1978 agreement allowed the operation of freight trains and subsequent amendments expanded its role to include transit to and from Nepal. Despite its reduced role in passenger services, Singhabad remains strategically important in regional trade.

The deserted platform

Today, Singhabad presents a poignant picture of its past glories. Its quays, once crowded with travelers, are now deserted. The ticket offices are closed and only a few staff members maintain the station. The echoes of the Darjeeling Mail have faded, leaving behind an eerie silence that stands in stark contrast to its vibrant history.

The last station

Singhabad is often referred to as India’s “last railway station” due to its unique location. Unlike other stations that serve as an origin or destination, Singhabad lies on the edge of the country, symbolizing a break in time. Its strategic location could potentially shape future railway developments, including strengthening international trade relations with neighboring countries.
