Clemson culture stands out with recently offered 4-star cornerback

Every year when the calendar rolls around June, Clemson begins handing out offers to rising high school seniors.

By mid-month, fewer than three dozen had been publicly announced. One of them went to 4-star cornerback Shavar Young Jr. (Webb School, Knoxville, Tennessee). He is one of only three corners to announce an offer so far.

While the Tigers originally viewed Young as a wide receiver, the more he’s developed, the more they like him at corner. Defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin and corners coach Mike Reed stopped by his high school during the evaluation period.

“My relationship initially was with Coach (Tyler) Grisham, when I first started going there,” Young told the Clemson Insider. “Lately, I’ve developed a relationship with Coach Reed. He’s a really transparent guy. Like to keep it real.

Blue-chip talent plays both ways in high school. and as a sophomore, he had 84 receptions for 1,130 yards and nine touchdowns, along with 17 tackles, 11 assists and an interception on defense.

“I mean, it’s an easy transition,” Young said. “I always play both and I feel like the two positions go hand in hand.”

Several recruiting services rank Young among the top 150 overall talents, and while he has more than two dozen offers, Georgia, Oregon, Tennessee, Florida and Notre Dame are some of the other schools which he believes are part of the mix.

When comparing Clemson to some others, it’s the culture that really resonates.

“Just family and stuff,” Young said. “It definitely has a family atmosphere.”

Young plans to announce his commitment Dec. 12 and says he plans to return to Clemson for a game in the fall. Until then, he will continue to build relationships, which will play a key role in his move toward decision-making.

“Who can develop me best on and off the field,” Young said. “Who can help me build relationships and become a better ball player.”
