Consider the representation made to regulate padayatras: HC

The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on Friday directed the authorities concerned to consider a petition filed by a petitioner asking them to regulate padayatras and create awareness among pilgrims to walk on the right side of the road and paste fluorescent stickers on their affairs. and wear reflective bracelets and headbands to avoid accidents.

The court was hearing a public interest litigation petition filed by B. Ramkumar Adityan of Tiruchendur in Thoothukudi district. The petitioner said pilgrims going to various temples and religious places walked in the evening and night as it was relatively cooler to do so. At night, worshipers were hit by speeding vehicles, leading to serious injuries and deaths.

To avoid such accidents, sidewalks made of heat-resistant paving stones should be installed for devotees on the right side of the roads as they could see vehicles coming in the opposite direction. Pilgrims should also be advised to stick fluorescent stickers on their belongings and wear wristbands and headbands to avoid accidents, he added.

A division bench comprising Justices R. Suresh Kumar and G. Arul Murugan directed the authorities to examine the representation made by the petitioner and pass appropriate orders, and disposed of the petition.
