Sheriff and county attorney candidates to meet at forum Monday

Sheriff and county attorney candidates to meet at forum Monday

Candidates for public order positions in Pima County will meet at a forum on Monday, June 17.

The event, sponsored by the League of Women Voters, will feature Democratic and Republican hopefuls in the races for county attorney and sheriff that voters will decide in the July 30 primary.

Pima County Prosecutor Laura Conover and her Democratic primary challenger, Mike Jette, will answer questions for an hour.

Conover has boasted that she has modernized the office’s operations and brought a more compassionate approach to justice since winning the county attorney general and civil attorney position four years ago, but Jette blamed his management style for leading to an exodus of experienced staff. Prosecutors and other lawyers and petty crime are out of control in Tucson.

No Republicans or independents ran in the Nov. 5 general election, so the primaries will decide the race.

The debate with the county attorney will be followed by an hour-long forum followed by an hour-long conversation with Sheriff Chris Nanos and Democratic primary challenger Sandy Rosenthal alongside three Republican candidates, Heather Lappin, Bill Phillips and Terry Frederick.

Nanos will face Rosenthal in the July 30 Democratic primary. In a June 8 debate moderated by Sentinel editor and publisher Dylan Smith, the outgoing sheriff defended his record while Rosenthal, a former PCSD SWAT team member and administrator, criticized his leadership and said that too many inmates were dying at the Pima County Jail under his tenure. watch.

While the two Democrats found brief moments of agreement on some issues, Rosenthal said he would not support Nanos if the incumbent won the primary.

On the GOP side, Phillips and Frederick are both retired PCSD deputies while Lappin still works as an administrator at the county jail.
