Patriots HC Jerod Mayo issues insightful message for QB Drake Maye

The path to becoming an elite NFL quarterback isn’t simple, but rookie New England Patriots QB Drake Maye seems to be taking the first steps toward becoming one pretty well, at least when you ask his coach -chief.

All eyes have been on the Patriots’ third overall pick during the team’s OTAs and minicamps to see how the future franchise quarterback is adjusting during his first few months in the league.

Of course, you can’t expect every step of the process to be perfect, but Maye has looked like a future franchise quarterback since he entered the building.

During the Patriots’ media session with HC Jerod Mayo during mandatory minicamps, the New England head coach was asked about the early progress the team has seen since Maye, where he charted a solid performance review, as well as a strong message about expectations for the rookie QB’s growth in the future:

“He’s done a great job. He’s going in the right direction. Now, in saying that, we know there are going to be tough days, and that’s one thing I’ve tried to emphasize to him: ‘ Very well, continue.’ “Improve one percent every day, it’s not always going to be great,” and he did a good job.

Among the most important priorities for the Patriots to focus on throughout Maye’s development, maintaining patience is at the top of the list.

The UNC product has clearly shown elite ability in terms of arm talent and physical tools to soon become one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but at just 21 years old and just 26 college starts, that may take some time before it is ready to ride. center.

With the depth chart at mid-June, Jacoby Brissett, added during the offseason, lands as the QB1 on the roster, with Maye trailing behind as the backup. If New England wanted to take a long-term approach of resting their rookie for a quarter or half of the season, the stage is set to do so.

With a strong showing during camp and the preseason, Maye could be in line for some snaps a little sooner, but it remains to be seen if that reality comes to fruition.

In the meantime, expect talk to continue to revolve around the Patriots’ QB room until this offense takes the field again in training camp in late July.
