Destruction of Allerton community fridge caught on camera

Owners and volunteers of a community fridge in Allerton are calling for those who destroyed it to come forward.

The incident earlier this week was captured on surveillance video and shows a group of children destroying the refrigerator.

“It makes me so sad. (It’s) something I do with my heart,” said Ignacio Collado, owner of a tire store on Boston Road. Collado says he recognizes the children in the video.

“When they come back after school, they ask, ‘Do you have any strawberries or grapes?’ We keep them even if we don’t have many,” he says.

The community fridge is completely stocked each evening with fresh produce, bread and whatever else Collado says he can get his hands on. He says he brings this food to the community because it’s something he learned from his high school teacher.

One resident says he comes to the fridge often and is grateful the fridge is still there to provide food for the community. He adds that it’s sad that the refrigerator was destroyed.

Collado says he and the refrigerator volunteers are not looking to press charges against the children. They actually want them to come forward and volunteer and give back to their community.
