M’sian parent shocked to find 7-year-old daughter added to WhatsApp group sharing sexual content

Social media and the internet have always been dangerous places for children, especially when their online activities are not carefully monitored.

A Malaysian parent learned this the hard way when her 7-year-old daughter was exposed to sexual content after being added to a WhatsApp group linked to a game her daughter plays online.

By accessing their Reddit account, SoFarSoFail shared how shocked they were to discover their number had been added to a WhatsApp group that shared sexual content between minors, after their 7-year-old daughter apparently clicked on an automatic invite link in a game they she plays.

They wrote: “Guys my number keeps getting invited in random WhatsApp groups. They’re primarily an Indonesian group, judging by the way they communicate. Usually I don’t really take it seriously, I just leave the group and report it.

“But this time it’s worse. A pedo group with a girl cartoon background. To make matters worse, my 7 year old daughter was using it at the time. They sent her NSFW photos and tried to groom her. It happened so quickly that I didn’t realize it until half an hour later.

They added that there are also other young boys and girls in the group.

SoFarSoFail chose not to leave the WhatsApp group in the hope that action can be taken against predators in the group

“What should I do to stop this?” How can I stop my number from being invited to random WhatsApp groups? Should I just show up and leave the group? Or is filing a police report helpful? they asked

SoFarSoFail also clarified that the name of the WhatsApp group is the same as that of a game their daughter plays, Avatar Worldand that their daughter had apparently clicked on an automatic invitation link to the WhatsApp group.

“I googled the link and found it was posted and shared everywhere, on ‘kid friendly’ videos (on platforms) like TikTok, YouTube and in games.”

The editors have since advised SoFarSoFail to change their WhatsApp settings to only allow their contacts to invite them to join groups.

It is truly frightening to think that adults are lurking around child-centric web pages to lure them into their traps.

We sincerely hope that parents will pay more attention to their children’s online activities to prevent them from falling prey to predators.
