Elden Ring director may consider full start-to-finish cooperation for future FromSoftware games

Elden Ring’s highly anticipated expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, releases Friday, June 21, and will close the book on this current chapter in FromSoftware’s history. As the influential studio begins to look beyond Elden Ring, it seems anything is possible, including a greater focus on the cooperative aspects of its games.

Speaking to PC Gamer, FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki was asked about the hugely popular Seamless Co-op mod on PC, which allows players to summon each other for a more traditional cooperative experience, not tied to bosses or limited to specific areas. Miyazaki’s response is quite promising: “It’s certainly not something that we actively oppose or want to downplay, wanting to go through the whole game together. As for where we were with Elden Ring , it was just about wanting a looser, more casual game.” style: enter, beat a boss, give up. “It doesn’t impose any technical restrictions on the player, it just allows them to complete that task and then move on, so to speak.”

Previous efforts have required a consumable item to engage in joyful cooperation with others. That would obviously have to be factored in to roaming the game world of a theoretical Elden Ring sequel with a team of hardened assassins at your side, but Miyazaki seems up to the task: “That doesn’t mean we will not consider other ways as you and your friend played, from start to finish, in full cooperation. This does not mean that we will not consider such ideas in our future games.
