20 cars caught in flood outside East Lansing apartments

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Heavy rain has flooded several roads and parking lots – and for some, it’s not the first time they’ve had to deal with this. This is particularly the case for Neighborhood Apartments in East Lansing, where about 20 cars were caught in the floods.

“I waded through the water and there’s water up to my steering wheel,” said Kat Bonner who lives in The Quarters. She says she was woken up by a notification that her car alarm was going off – and she thought it was being broken into.

“The power was out, so I stood up blindly,” Bonner continued. “When I got out, I honestly wished my car was broken into.”

That’s because she went outside and found her car almost completely underwater.

Currently there are around 20 cars stuck in the parking lot. Residents said the water had receded a bit, but it wasn’t even close to being drained.

Management says no one had to be moved or evacuated, but cars will have to be towed and evacuated.

According to Bonner, apartment management says there’s not much they can do right now other than wait for the water to drain.

“Once all the water is gone, they bring in tow trucks and try to talk with everyone’s insurance and sort things out step by step,” Bonner said.

This is not the first time this land has been flooded. The same thing happened in 2021.

The City of East Lansing created a investigation for people to express their concerns about the problems of repeated flooding in the city. They say an independent review showed the current drainage system is not suitable for the increasing severity of storms, which they say is caused by climate change.
