Rosebank grooves to raise awareness for kidney cancer with silent disco

The event was part of a global initiative led by the International Kidney Cancer Coalition, dedicated to raising awareness of kidney cancer and promoting patient empowerment under this year’s theme, Listening.

C4C, renowned for its commitment to providing the South African public with credible cancer information, organized the event to highlight the crucial role of “listening” in healthcare. The theme focused on three key aspects: the benefits of shared decision-making between patients and healthcare providers, the ability for patients to seek a second opinion, and the importance of discerning reliable sources to combat misinformation.

“I think it’s a good initiative, especially for our communities,” remarked Ntokozo Dludla, a participant in the event. “Often, diseases like kidney cancer don’t get the attention they deserve because they aren’t as well known as breast or other cancers. Events like this help raise awareness and encourage people to take their health seriously.

Lynda Woods, another attendee, expressed support for the event’s mission. “Kidney cancer is a silent killer and awareness is crucial. Many patients avoid seeing a doctor until it is too late. This is why initiatives like this are so important: to encourage early diagnosis and treatment,” she said.

The choice of a Silent Disco was both symbolic and practical, encouraging participants to listen – a metaphor for paying attention to kidney health. Attendees donned wireless headphones and danced to music as the sun set over Johannesburg, illustrating the event’s focus on physical activity as a way to promote kidney health.

As the event progressed, information sessions followed with musical interludes, providing attendees with accessible and valuable knowledge on the prevention and management of kidney disease. This innovative approach fostered a sense of community and reinforced the critical message of “listening to your body, credible information and healthcare professionals.”
