WASHINGTON TWP., New Jersey (WPVI) — Faced with increasing car thefts, shoplifting and burglaries, Washington Township police created a “holiday watch” program.

“The program aims to provide increased security and peace of mind to our residents while they are on vacation,” said Chief Patrick Gurcsik.

Gurcsik hopes to prevent break-ins like the one on Plumtree Drive in May, when a suspect broke a back door to gain entry to the home.

“We want to make sure everyone is safe in our community,” he added.

Gurcsik said the free service allows property owners to request periodic checks of their property by agents.

Around forty residents registered on the first day.

“Check the doors, make sure they are secure and locked, also check the windows, and look for and report any suspicious activity,” Chief Gurcsik said.

Residents who live on Aldridge Way didn’t hesitate to sign up after a neighbor’s home was burglarized in March.

“It’s a great program,” John Irvin said. “I think when we leave, it gives us a little peace of mind knowing that our home will be taken care of.”

A neighbor who lives on Plumtree Drive believes it will help reduce current crime.

“We’ve lived here 35 years, we’ve never had problems like this. It’s crazy,” said Michelle Armenti. “I would love to be able to say, ‘My house is safe.’ I can go away and be calm and not worry because normally we worry about it.”

Residents praised police for already increasing patrols in targeted neighborhoods and now adding this service.

“We love this city and we love the police force here,” Nicole McCormack said. “We’re just happy to see them stepping up.”

Chief Gurcsik also recommends that homeowners keep their lights on at night, stop mail delivery and notify neighbors when they are away.

To register for the Vacation Watch program, register online or complete an application form at the police station.
