“I am appalled… why is CM remaining silent? »: Tejashwi Yadav on HC’s rejection of 65% increase in Bihar quota | News from India

As the The Patna High Court on Thursday set aside the Bihar government’s decision to lift reservations in jobs and educational institutions at 65 per cent, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday questioned Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s silence on the issue.

Accusing the BJP of trying to end reservations, Yadav said, “I am appalled by the judgment. The BJP had tried to scuttle the caste survey, which formed the basis for the quota increase. It is not surprising that such a verdict came within days of the party’s return to power at the Centre,” he said. “I don’t understand why the CM is remaining silent on this,” Yadav lamented.

Yadav said he would write to the CM, suggesting him to lead an all-party delegation to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and seek corrective measures. “As far as legal remedies are concerned, the RJD will move the Supreme Court against the High Court order if the state government fails to rise to the occasion,” said the RJD leader, who was vice-president. CM when the Bihar government released. the caste survey report, highlighting an increase in the population of SC, ST, OBC and extremely backward classes.

On November 7, 2023, the then Nitish Kumar-led Mahagathbandhan government had increased Bihar’s quota to 65 percent. Thus, the reservation in the state has effectively increased to 75 per cent if the 10 per cent quota for the economically weaker sections (EWS) is taken into account.

A division bench comprising HC Chief Justice K Vinod Chandan and Justice Harish Kumar quashed the government’s notifications, saying they “violate the right to equality”. This follows a petition by Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Nalanda, and others.
