Perth to create sensory room

Perth Airport aims to help neurodivergent travellers with new room at T1 International

The airport hopes the project will provide a calming environment with reduced noise levels and soft lighting. The new facility will include seating areas for small groups of travelers, two private areas, sensory research accessoriesand small storage spaces. It will also feature soft furnishings and color treatments, as well as a flight information display screento allow passengers to receive uninterrupted boarding updates.

“We understand that travelling can be an extremely stressful situation, particularly for neurodivergent travellers. We recognise this and wanted to provide a space that would make the process easier,” said Perth Airport’s Commercial and Aviation Director Kate Holsgrove“With a focus on removing barriers to neurodivergent people“The room will cater to all ages, with an emphasis on supporting decompression in a busy airport environment,” she added.

The airport worked with its Advisory Group on Access and Inclusionwhich led to the development of a scale room demonstration, including furniture, which was then made available to the group for testing and providing additional feedback.

More Architecture designed the space and Perth Airport has now appointed the company WA Hoskins Subcontracting Company to build the new sensory room, which should be completed by the end of the year.
