The UDX Airwolf hoverbike is no ordinary quadcopter – we’re talking a 430-horsepower eVTOL motorcycle-like vehicle that seats two and has “hummingbird-like” agility. It has four ventilation units that can tilt independently. Weighing in at 639 lbs, the Airwolf promises 0-60 mph acceleration in just three seconds and a blazing top speed of 142 mph.

The price of entry

To fly the UDX Airwolf, you’ll need a U.S. sport pilot license, which requires 20 hours of flight training (five of which are solo) and passing a few tests. While not as expensive as a private pilot’s license, the real barrier to entry is the Airwolf’s price tag of $350,000 – a sum that only the well-heeled can afford.

The reality check

Although the dream is enticing, the reality is still developing. UDX has built small and large scale working prototypes, incorporating the thrust vectoring propulsion system. These prototypes demonstrate reasonable stability and agility during flight testing, but it will still be a few years before a model is ready for production.

However, with the rapid advancement of battery and electric motor technology, these compact personal eVTOLs are no longer just retro-futuristic dreams; they are already there, although expensive and in small numbers. Some are presented as fun machines, while others aspire to be practical transportation options for commuting, search and rescue operations, or rapid response to accidents.
