Is it illegal to stop too far from a red light?

ORLANDO, Florida. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve answers viewers’ questions about the rules of the road, helping Florida residents become better drivers by being better educated.

Viewer Timothy M. asked Officer Steve on Thursday, “Why do people stop so far behind other cars or at a red light?” Sometimes more than two to three car lengths.

He said he saw that and it drove him crazy.

“At a time when the biggest problem we complain about is traffic, you would think we would want to fill as much space as possible. Too often we encounter a driver who has stopped well short of the required zone to do so,” said Officer Steve.

So you’re in heavy traffic – maybe five or six cars from the actual traffic light – and there’s nothing but space to your right because another driver has just s ‘stop and leave it that way. According to police officer Steve, this driver could receive a ticket.

“This is illegal and could result in a traffic ticket in a number of ways. Whether it’s obstructing traffic, stopping or standing inappropriately, fill the space in front of you so other traffic can follow,” he said.
