Daniel Sturridge shocked Cole Palmer no longer features for England

Former England international Daniel Sturridge can’t believe Cole Palmer was once again overlooked by Gareth Southgate in the draw against Denmark.

England put in a lackluster performance and although they took the lead through Harry Kane, they were pegged back thanks to a brilliant strike from Morten Hjulmand, with neither team able to find a winner.

Southgate’s men knew a win would see them through to the last 16, but a poor performance will no doubt face tough questions.

What happened to Palmer?

After an average performance against Serbia, many people expected a slight improvement against the Danes, but that just didn’t happen.

As has become the norm under Southgate, England took the lead and sat back inviting pressure on themselves instead of going for the kill.

The team’s balance looked unbalanced, particularly in midfield, while the attack also struggled with Harry Kane, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka all replaced in the second half.

Many were left perplexed that once again Palmer, who was named Premier League Young Player of the Year last season, was left on the bench.

Jarrod Bowen and Eberechi Eze were preferred over the Chelsea star, despite the match calling for a player of his quality.

Former Chelsea striker Sturridge couldn’t cope either and took X.com to share his thoughts.

He simply said:

“I’m really shocked we haven’t seen Cole Palmer on the field yet.”

It seems incredible, considering Palmer’s season, that he has yet to play a single minute, and it appears he may not feature at all.

It’s clear that for some reason he is behind Bowen and Eze in the pecking order, which is difficult to understand given he recorded the most goals in the Premier League last season.

Palmer will once again have to put his head down, train hard and hope to get an opportunity against Slovenia.

It would be a real shame to see a player of his quality not get minutes to show what he is capable of on the international stage.
