Whitman: Illinois will put Terrence Shannon’s jersey in the rafters

A week after Terrence Shannon Jr. was acquitted of rape charges in Kansas, Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman told reporters that Shannon’s jersey would soon hang in the rafters at the State Farm Center.

Whitman made the announcement during a media roundtable Thursday morning, according to multiple reports.

Hours later, the program confirmed Whitman’s statements via a press release, announcing that Shannon would be joining its Honored Jerseys program.

Shannon was not a consensus All-American while playing for Illinois; it’s one of the requirements for a jersey to hang from the rafters. However, many voters may not have voted for Shannon due to his current charges and record at the time.

“Proud of you, 0. Your name will forever belong to the rafters.”

Also on Thursday, Brad Underwood released a statement via his Instagram and X, praising and praising TSJ.

“Terrence is one of the great workers, one of the great leaders and one of the great competitors that I have coached during my career. He plays with passion and joy and, most importantly, he is an incredible teammate,” he said.

Now, Shannon, fresh off one of the great seasons in Illinois basketball history, will soon have his jersey hung above the court, alongside recent greats Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn, and other legends of the Illini program.
