ESCANABA — As we reach mid-June, today we’re introduced to Escanaba Speedway street racer Eric Mathieson as he shows his support for his fellow racers. Mathieson currently sits in second place in points, 11 behind leader Jason Piron who had a close race with Mathieson on Saturday. Mathieson has finished second three weeks in a row and will be back in action Saturday at the Christian Groleau Memorial Race as he chases his first victory of the season.

Escanaba Daily Press Sports Editor Adam Hinch had the opportunity to catch up with Mathieson for this week’s Q&A.

Adam Hinch: What got you into running?

Eric Mathieson: I used to help my friends with their off-road truck and I’ve been there ever since.

AH: How many years have you been running?

EM: This is my 15th year this season.

AH: What is your favorite sport outside of motor racing?

EM: I have to devote myself to football.

AH: Who is your favorite NFL team?

EM: Packers.

AH: Who is your favorite Packers player?

EM: Probably between Brett Favre, Dorsey Levens or Reggie White.

AH: What is your favorite soda?

EM: Mountain Dew.

AH: Burgers and brats or fish fries?

EM: Hamburgers and brats.

AH: What is the most fun part of racing for you?

EM: Family. My mom, my brother and my girlfriend all come to watch and I get to race against my dad and watch my daughter race.

AH: What is the most memorable moment in racing so far?

EM: Winning with my kids there to watch and be with family.
